San Leopoldo
San Leopoldo

A more modern style of Montalcino wine, San Leopoldo is the offspring of an expert blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The Cabernet grapes are harvested from the “Il Ferralino” vineyard, which also belongs to Tenuta Il Poggione; it was the first vineyard in Montalcino to be planted with Cabernet (in 1974).

After fermentation, the Sangiovese is matured for 12 months in French oak barrels, whilst the Cabernet is allowed to age for 12 months in barriques, also of French oak. Once aged in wood, the wines are blended, then bottle aged for at least 8 months.

The result is an extremely typical Tuscan wine: a Super Tuscan that succeeds in combining all the characteristics of Sangiovese with the complexity and smoothness of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

Grapes: 50% Sangiovese, 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc
Harvesting: hand-picked into crates
Fermentation: separately, 12-15 days submerged cap fermentation at controlled temperatures of 25°-28°C.
Aging: separately. 12 months in French oak barrels for the Sangiovese and 12 months in French oak barriques for the Cabernet then, after blending, 8 months of bottle aging.
Characteristics: Very intense ruby red colour. Fruity bouquet with red and dark berry notes and spicy, chocolate tones. Austere on the palate, extremely well structured, full smooth round flavour with velvety tannins. Long finish, another hint of spices and a very clear peppery note.
Serving suggestions: Grilled red meats, mixed stews including boar meat, mature cheeses.
